A buyer's checklist for independent distribution

Independent distributors fill real gaps in the supply chain. Here is how to tell a good one from a broker with a website.

Independent distributors fill real gaps in the supply chain. Here is how to tell a good one from a broker with a website.

Independent distribution exists because authorised channels are built for steady, forecast demand. When you need forty of something today, or a part that went end of sale last year, or a mixed order across six manufacturers on one invoice, the independent market is where you end up.

It is also a market with a very wide quality range, and the difference is not visible on a website. These are the questions worth asking.

Questions that separate serious suppliers

  • Where is the stock physically located, and can they tell you today?
  • Will they provide serial numbers before you pay, rather than after?
  • What exactly does the warranty cover, who honours it, and for how long?
  • Do they test before despatch, and will they show you the record?
  • Is condition stated plainly: new sealed, new bulk, or refurbished?
  • Are they a registered company with a number you can verify?

Warning signs

Be careful with quotes dramatically below market without an explanation, suppliers who will not state a physical address, and anyone describing refurbished stock in words that avoid the term. Be wary too of claimed authorisations. Many independent distributors, ourselves included, are not authorised resellers for every brand they carry, and an honest supplier will say so without being asked.
